Privacy Policy

EasySplit ("we," "us," or "our") operates the EasySplit mobile application and web services (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service.
By accessing or using EasySplit, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with any part of this policy, please do not use our Service.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Account Information
When you sign in with Google OAuth, we receive and store the following from your Google account:
- Display name
- Email address
- Google account ID (unique identifier)
- Profile photo URL
We do not receive or store your Google account password. Authentication is handled entirely through Google's OAuth 2.0 protocol.
1.2 Financial and Expense Data
When you use EasySplit to track and split expenses, we collect:
- Expense descriptions, amounts, and categories
- Split ratios and participant assignments
- Settlement records and payment confirmations
- Group names, member lists, and group settings
1.3 Payment Information
- UPI Virtual Payment Address (VPA): If you choose to add your UPI ID for settlements, we store it to facilitate peer-to-peer payment links. This is optional and can be removed at any time.
We do not process payments directly. UPI VPAs are used solely to generate payment deep links that open your UPI app.
1.4 Receipt Images
When you upload a receipt for AI-powered scanning, the image is sent to our server for processing. Receipt images are:
- Encrypted at rest on our servers
- Sent to OpenAI's Vision API for text extraction and parsing
- Used only to generate an editable expense draft — you must confirm before any expense is created
1.5 Contact Information
- Phone number: Optionally provided when inviting others to groups via SMS. We do not use phone numbers for marketing.
1.6 Technical Data
We automatically collect:
- Device type and operating system version
- App version
- IP address (for security and rate limiting)
- Timestamps of API requests
2. How We Use Your Information
We use collected information to:
- Provide the Service: Create and manage groups, track expenses, calculate balances, and facilitate settlements
- AI Receipt Parsing: Process uploaded receipt images to extract expense details using OpenAI Vision, presenting you with an editable draft for confirmation
- Notifications: Send email summaries, settlement reminders, and group activity updates via our email provider (Resend)
- Security: Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access
- Improvement: Analyze aggregated, anonymized usage patterns to improve app functionality
We never sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use your expense data for advertising or profiling.
3. Third-Party Services
We share limited data with the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:
- Google (OAuth): Authenticates your identity. We receive only the profile data listed in Section 1.1.
- OpenAI (Receipt Parsing): Receipt images are sent to OpenAI's Vision API for text extraction. OpenAI's data usage policy applies to this processing. Images are sent via encrypted connections and are not used by OpenAI to train their models per their API data usage policy.
- Fly.io (Hosting): Our backend infrastructure runs on Fly.io. Your data is stored in Fly.io's managed PostgreSQL databases with encryption at rest.
- Resend (Email): Transactional emails (settlement reminders, summaries) are sent through Resend. Only your email address and message content are shared.
- Redis (Caching): Used for server-side caching and background job queues. No personal data is persisted long-term in Redis.
4. Data Retention
We retain your personal data and expense records for as long as your account is active. Specifically:
- Account data: Kept until you delete your account
- Expense and group data: Kept until you delete your account. When you leave a group, your shared expenses remain visible to other group members but are disassociated from your profile.
- Receipt images: Stored encrypted until account deletion
- Server logs: Retained for up to 90 days for debugging and security, then automatically purged
5. Your Rights and Data Deletion
You have the right to:
- Access your data: View all your expense data, groups, and profile information within the app
- Correct your data: Update your profile and expense information at any time
- Delete your account: Permanently remove all your data by using the account deletion feature in the app, or by visiting our account deletion page
- Data portability: Request a copy of your data by contacting us at support@akash-deep.com
When you delete your account, we permanently erase your profile, expense history, receipt images, and all associated data from our systems within 30 days. Some anonymized, aggregated data may remain for analytics purposes.
6. Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:
- Encryption in transit: All data is transmitted over TLS 1.3 encrypted connections
- Encryption at rest: Database storage uses AES-256 encryption via Fly.io's managed PostgreSQL
- Authentication: JWT-based authentication with secure token rotation and refresh mechanisms
- Secrets management: No plaintext secrets in code — all credentials are managed via environment variables
- Access control: Role-based access within groups ensures members can only access data they are authorized to view

7. Children's Privacy
EasySplit is not designed for or directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at support@akash-deep.com and we will promptly delete that information.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, sending a notification through the app or via email.
Your continued use of EasySplit after any changes indicates your acceptance of the updated policy.
